1920s-30 Danish Brass Antique Nautical Magnetic Compass Original Wooden Box

About the Item

Magnetic compass on universal joint in its original wooden box with slot lid, produced by Iver C. Weilbach & Co Amaliegade 30 Copenhagen. The compass consists of a cylindrical vessel of brass and bronze, called a mortar, on the bottom of which is fixed a hard metal stem, called a sensitive element, on which the compass card rests so that zero coincides with the magnetic polarity . To minimize friction, the mortar is filled with liquid with a low freezing point, also having the purpose of quickly dampening any oscillations and closed at the top by a sturdy protective glass; the date 6- 1-30 is engraved on the glass. A decal on the lid, and one of brass and lead on the front, has the name of the manufacturer. Box size 21 x 21.3 x 13 cm compass diameter 13.5 cm. Excellent condition, fully functional. Weilbach is among the oldest, existing maritime supplier companies in the world. The foundations of the company are dated back on November 24, 1755, when flag, sail and compass maker Iver Jensen Borger set up his own maritime supplier business in Copenhagen, Denmark. Then he specialized in the production of nautical instruments, mainly magnetic compasses, as well as flags and sails for sailing vessels, expanding the business into one of the main maritime suppliers in Copenhagen. When Borger died in 1799, his son-in-law, Johan Philip Weilbach, took over the business and during the nineteenth century it passed to subsequent generations of the Weilbach family. In 1931, Weilbach entered into an agreement with the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office, the main global producer of nautical charts. Until the 1950s, Weilbach competed with another nautical chart supplier in the Danish market, but since the late 1950s it became the main supplier of nautical charts to Danish shipping companies.
