Rare American advertising “The Swan Pen” by Mabie. Todd & Co A rare example of an early-20th century American shop advertising display. In the form of an oversized hand-crafted wooden pen with brass tip. With its original metal fixtures and braided hanging rope still in place. This example is rare not only due to its condition and form but simply because of its size standing 40 inches tall. The company originated in America from the beginnings during the 1860s when a Mr. Todd and a Mr. Mabie began making pencil cases and pen holders in New York. Later they were joined by the Bard Brothers who made Gold nibs and by 1873 the company of Mabie Todd and Bard were established in New York. Seascape with Clippership by George Howell Gay (American: 1858 - 1931), circa 1890, an oil on canvas bow view of a clippership under full sail, running with stun'sls and skysails set, on lively sea under blue cloudy sky, with a second square-rigger visible in the background, signed in the lower right, and titled on the reverse "Clipper Ship Before the Wind." A beautiful and dramatic painting with a cool, brisk feel. The painting is in fine condition, with one small patch along the upper margin and a tiny spot of corresponding inpainting.
