Okitenugui Kabuto Samurai Helmet Shaped as a Head Towel Saika, Early Edo Period
Located in Milano, IT
Okitenugui kabuto Samurai helmet shaped as a head towel Saika, early Edo period, 17th century The Haruta armorers who moved to Kii province in the early 17th century, took the name from the village where they worked, Saika, near Wakayama, possibly on request of the local daimyo, Asano Yukinaga, a great armour amateur. Specialised in the construction of plate helmets, they produced mainly two typologies of kabuto: one with six plates covered with a chrysanthemum-shaped plate on top and one shaped as a “head towel”, called okitenugui. The latter type of kabuto employs very heavy plates crafted in a curved manner and was improved in order to make it resistant to firearms. This okitenugui kabuto features some distinctive decorations of the Haruta school, including the application of cut-out iron elements, including eyebrows, washers and lozenge-shaped decorations on the sides. The ring on the top, however, is a rare feature and could be used to hold a small war flag.

Chinese Export Blue & White Tea Bowl and Saucer, Neptune, the God of Sea
Located in Downingtown, PA
Chinese Export Porcelain European-subject Blue & White Tea Bowl and Saucer, Neptune, The God of The Sea, Dutch market, Yongzheng Period, Circa 1730-35 The Chinese Export porcelain, probably made for the Dutch market, depicts Neptune, the God of the Sea, standing with his triton in the center of the design with a number of other figures to his left and right with three large fish or whales at his feet. The lower section of the design depicting the sea. The border of each piece with a repeating diaper design. Dimensions: Saucer: 4 1/2 inches diameter x 3/4 inch high (11.53cm diameter x 1.91cm high); Cup: 2 3/4 inches diameter x 1 3/4 inches high (6.99cm diameter x 4.45cm high). The design is after an etching called `The Realm of Neptune` by Frederick Bloemaert (c.1610-c.1669) completed between 1650-1656, after a drawing by his father Abraham Bloemaert (1566–1651). This is a Baroque design which is only found in blue and white on Chinese porcelain, it occurs on fine grained porcelain and Chinese soft-paste porcelain. Both dinner services and tea services were produced. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a plate in their collection, Helena Woolworth McCann Collection, Purchase, Winfield Foundation Gift, 1966 (Ass. # 66.27.5). Reference: Jorg states "The depiction of Neptune, the God of the Sea of classical mythology occurs in several varieties on Chine de Commande from the 1740`s onwards. How well the design sold is illustrated by an order from 1778, when they sent a chocolate cup with this design as a model for similarly decorated plates. However, the Dutch merchants...

Gold and Agate Snuff Box Belonging to Anne, First Duchess of Buccleuch
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This oval gold snuff box is inscribed with a crest of ‘a stag trippant’ within mantling of upright ostrich plumes tied with a bow, all below a ducal coronet and above a cypher of the entwined initials ‘B.A.B.’ for Anne of Buccleuch. English, circa 1670. Provenance: Anne, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch Anne Scott, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch (1651-1732) was a wealthy Scottish peeress. After her father died when she was a few months old, and her sisters by the time she was 10, she inherited the family’s titles. She was married, at 12 years old, to James, 1st Duke of Monmouth, the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II, then 14. Following the king’s death in February 1685, James spearheaded an anti-Catholic revolt to depose the new king, James II, and claim the throne from his uncle. The brief Monmouth Rebellion ended in defeat and James, by then Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch, was executed for treason. The Duchess had six children by Monmouth, and a further three by her second husband, Charles, 3rd Baron Cornwallis, whom she married in 1688. She died in 1732 and was succeeded by her grandson, Francis, Earl of Dalkeith. The style of chasing used on this box is very reminiscent of a signed piece in the Gilbert...

Late 18th Century Earthenware Hanukkah Lamp, Djerba, Tunisia
Located in New York, NY
A rare, late 18th century earthenware Hanukkah lamp from Djerba, Tunisia. Rectangular in shape, the Hanukkah lamp is supported by two legs. The oil fonts take the form of eight small recesses, with pinched edges on one side for wicks. Apparently, a servant light (now missing) was placed in the upper part of the lamp. This is a particularly rare and early specimen. In all likelihood, this model – undocumented in the literature – represents a missing link between the stone lamps used in North Africa and the more familiar earthenware lamps of Tunisia, which are generally glazed in a greenish hue (in similar fashion to the present lamp). But in the latter group, the oil fonts are elevated, that is, supported on top of small columns, and are similar in design to ancient earthenware...

18th Century Galician Brass Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Cast brass Hanukkah Lamp, Galicia, 18th century. The backplate is cast and pierced featuring dense scrollwork. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression. When a mold wears out, a casting from that mold is often used as the mold for the next generation. Those later lamps...

Interspersed between some of the words are depictions of foliage and flowers. Large decorative star in which the very center has three interlocking fish. This dish was used for the custom of sending gifts of food to friends or neighbors during Purim. In Central Europe, nuts and candied or dried fruit were the usual treats extended. The astrological symbol of the month of Adar, in which Purim falls out on, are fish, which is why that is featured in the center. 18th century pewter Purim dishes are much more scarce than 18th century pewter Passover...
