17th Century Italian Baroque Basement Painted and Gilt Wood Sculpture Stand 1661

About

17th century polychrome painted basement, rectangular shaped hand-realized in poplar wood, decorated in polychrome tempera with floral and vegetal motifs on both front and sides. It is a lovely hand-painted antique base for a sculpture of Italian, Piedmontese origin. Lower and upper profiles still show gilding traces. Good age related condition, wear consistent with use. It is presumably the supporting element of an almsgiver or devotional sculpture, for ecclesiastical use, considering the opening on the top and the inscription inside the alms box "Lo dio de limosna Greg. Becerraibiedma ano 1661." We are not able to translate this Latin-Spanish sentence with abbreviations, may be "he gave it in almsgiving to Gregory.... in 1661" . In Italy we had Spanish domination in the second half of 17th century. Receive our new selections direct from 1stdibs by email each week. Please click Follow Dealer below and see them first! Period 1661 Measures: Height 13. 5 cm, width 41 cm, depth 25 cm.
