Arts and Crafts Era Gothic Revival Blood of Christ Church Jug w. IHS Christogram

About the Item

Sizable and unique Gothic church relic with the IHS Christogram and the Patonce cross. This one of a kind, heavy brass antique is another one of our recent great finds. The design of this jug clearly shows that it was handcrafted in the Arts and Crafts era, but the IHS Christogram on the one side and the patonce cross on the other tell us that is was created for either a church or monastery. The meaning of the IHS Christogram is widespread, but this particular one has the Gothic trefoil symbol at the end of each letter. The patonce cross is a variant of the pattée cross, but with each arm terminating in a three points or petals. The three petals represent the trinity and the cross’s twelve petals represent the twelve Apostles. We are not sure if this striking religious relic was used in a church or monastery, but it was certainly not created for home use. This large and great quality jug is as strong and stabile as the day it was handcrafted. There are no loose or missing pieces and apart from some minor wear this unique antique with its great patina is in very good condition. This unique Gothic jug is excellent value for money.
