Early 20th Century French Wall Hanging Brass and Wood Crucifix
About the Item
This beautiful and intricate crucifix was created in France circa 1930. This exquisitely crafted crucifix, combines wood and brass in an intricate and elegant design. The wooden cross has rounded, clover-like edges, adding a decorative and ornate quality to its form. The metalwork features intricate patterns and embellishments, including Fleur de Lys motifs surrounding the Lord figure. The center is dressed with a finely rendered figure of Jesus Christ. The combination of dark wood and golden metal creates a striking contrast, making this crucifix both a spiritual object and an artistic display piece. The religious item is in excellent condition and adorns a rich patinated brass finish. The cross would make an excellent addition for daily devotions.
The Fleur-de-Lis has been used in the heraldry of numerous European nations, but is particularly associated with France, notably during its monarchical period. As France is a historically Catholic nation, the Fleur-de-Lis became "at one and the same time, religious, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic," especially in French heraldry. The Fleur-de-Lis has been used by French royalty and throughout history to represent Catholic saints of France. In particular, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are often depicted with a lily.

19th Century French Hand Carved Polychrome and Painted Life-Size Wall Crucifix
Located in Dallas, TX
This important antique carved statue of Christ nailed on the cross was crafted in Lyon, France, circa 1850. Found in a private chapel in the Rhone Valley, the large antique cross features a detailed hand carved sculpture of Jesus nailed on a wooden cross with forged iron nails over his hands and feet. The painted sculpture is well-proportioned, and has realistic details throughout the body, face, and hair. The pediment has the Latin inscription INRI (in John 19:19), which in English translates to "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews", and John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages, Hebrew, Latin, and Greek during the crucifixion of Jesus. The title "King of the Jews" is only used in the New Testament by gentiles, namely by the Magi, Pontius Pilate, and the Roman soldiers. In contrast, the Jewish leaders use the designation "King of Israel". Although the phrase "King of the Jews" is used in most English translations, it has also been translated "King of the Judeans". The life-size religious crucifix...
