Silver Incense Burner, Spain, 17th Century

About

This piece does not follow the most usual type in the form of Castilian censers of the 17th century, but the spherical ones are very common already in the Byzantine Empire and both in the West and in the Arab world since then. Compare outstanding examples such as the brass censer of the Alhambra Museum of the Almorávide period (dated between 1101 and 1150), or the one from the Val d'Aran of the Lázaro Galdiano Museum dated in the 12th century (inv. 02801), those of Limoges of the same Museum, or the Baroque Museum of Navarra dated between 1600 and 1699 (CE000205). The decoration of the piece, based on mirrors and fleshy vegetable elements follows the usual movement of the Baroque, with a clear symmetrical organization of classicist memory, combining several techniques (engraving, embossing ...). The material and decoration show the quality of the work, which would have been commissioned for a private church or chapel of importance. Weight: 896 gr. Measures: 14 x 14 x 19 cms.
