Finest quality crafted, Gothic Revival monks reading chair.
If you are looking for a stylish chair and a small library step into one then this handcrafted specimen could be perfect for you. This rare antique is made of solid elmwood only. This remarkable design truly is a joy to look at and the beautiful, natural grain in the warm colored elm makes it even more special. The open back makes the Gothic window-like elements stand out both when looking at it from the front and back. The former owner explained how this chair was once part of a monastery library in the south of Holland. We can only guess as to how many hours monks must have spent reading and learning on this rare chair. When you open the lid (or seat) the strong elm wooden step appears, but behind that also is a 'cavity' for keeping some (small) books. The extra step must have made it possible to reach for the books that were higher up as well. The hand carved and hand painted faux rush seat is another special feature that we have never seen before. All these unique elements make this antique chair another one of our recent great finds and a desirable and meaningful antique to behold, the fact that it is in superb condition does not hurt either. If you already have a place in mind for this religious relic then maybe you should be its next custodian.
