Wrought Iron Grille, Spain, 16th Century

About the Item

Typologically, it is a partial architectural grating with an ornamental and defensive purpose at the same time. Likewise, it clearly shows some of the striking decorative and typological variety customary in the 15th century Gothic gilding, but it also responds to usual evolutions in the 16th century. A first stage of evolution to the Renaissance is introduced, sometimes passing, until the first third of this century, and is characterized, among other things, by the variety of baroque with frequent combination in the same rod of shapes cuadrilla and things, by the Structure of three cloths of very similar width and number of bars and central door with lintel, decorative elements related to the Renaissance, use of embossing, etc., characteristics that can be appreciated in the present example. The absence of intercorporeal bands, common in the bars of this period, only indicates that it was made to protect a small chapel. The presence of lily flowers indicates the expansion of Catalan models throughout the peninsula, which, when coming directly from France, often showed this decorative element. The relationship between this fence and certain Gothic heritages is clear, especially if it were bought with fully Renaissance examples such as the National Archaeological Museum of 1575 (inventory 57551). Normally, the sixteenth-century collections are found, if they have been preserved, in the chapel for which they were made, in prominent private collections or in important museums. Compare this work with the grate of the head of the Church of St. Julian of Nagore (Navarre) or the chapel of the Santísimo of the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Real in Pamplona. Size: hojas 69 x 268 Copete 390 x 110 cms. Depth is orientative.

Chapel grille with two fixed leaves at the sides, and double opening leaf in the center, topped with an elaborate crest, all made of wrought and "blued" iron, creating a polychrome preserved in good condition. The bars of the lateral zones, tubular, are decorated with discs of the same diameter. The double door of the center presents bars ballasted to the center flanking a disc and other similar disks up and down; in the lower area, there is a frieze with two opposing "ces" accompanied by simplified plant elements that draw volutes towards the sides; note the small wheels at the bottom of the grid. The crest presents an oval shield with the cross of the Order of Calatrava, enhanced with architectural elements and flanked by vegetal "S-shapped" motifs, accompanied by leaves; to the sides of this central piece appear two columns of ajarronado shaft enhanced with "C-shapped-forms" and "S-shapped-forms" drawn in their shafts. In general terms, there is talk of a division in two stages in terms of Antique grills...

  • Silver Pax O Portapaz, Spain, 16th Century
    Located in Madrid, ES
Portapaz. Silver in its color and gilded. Century XVI. Portapaz made of silver that has a handle (decorated with delicate plant motifs similar to those of the pilasters) and a female and a male bust at the bottom, as well as other architectural elements on the back, and, on the front, an architectural composition classicist basement (with busts flanking a flower and a cross), two pilasters (vegetal decoration and capital recalling the composite order) with entablature (flowers flanking an angel's head; moldings), and a semicircular arch finish with elements veined in relief under cross and flanked by two architectural motifs in the upper part. This composition frames and enhances a gilt silver relief where you can see the Lament or Cry over the Body of Christ, with the Virgin holding the head of Jesus, Saint John at her side, the Magdalene and other characters, a cross following the group and a landscape background with houses and plant elements. This architectural structure mentioned is similar to the one present in other 16th century portapaces, such as that of the Magdalena de Dos Hermanas parish (Hernando de Ballesteros el Mozo, around 1575); or that of the Galaroza parish (same author and date); or that of the portapaz of San Miguel de Jerez de los Caballeros (in some details); etc. As for the relief, it is possible to clearly see a strong Italian influence, and the similarity between it and important pieces such as the Portapaz known as “de Cisneros by Juan de Burgos (1493-1497; MuseoCatedralicio de Alcalá de Henares), as well as in paintings and reliefs. Also noteworthy are both the male and female busts in the lower area and the Maltese cross (or Saint John's) that appears in this area. This symbol was used since the 12th century as an insignia by the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Order of Malta...

Group of 16th century (or earlier, possibly Gothic) Spanish or Italian wrought iron furniture mounts. These hand-wrought bosses and nails show incredible workmanship. These would have been used to decorate - and to structurally hold together an early chest or casket. The four geometric bosses beautifully made, eight ounces each without the nail! The nails are works of art in themselves, with their heavy geometric heads. Also two round bosses with the nail integral to the piece, one a mushroom form, the other like a parasol. And a single hand-wrought double sided nail. Great group of early iron. Provenance: Frances Pratt, Writer, Artist, Collector. New York City.
