Stereoscope "Le Multiphote" Photogragh, France, 1900s
Located in Buenos Aires, Olivos
Rare automatic stereoscope or multiple stereoscope "Le Multiphote" in working order. This beautiful model is the smallest of the automatic stereoscopes. It was manufactured in France circa 1910. In good conditions as you can appreciate in the photographs. The stereoscope retains all its original parts and components and works very well, being a pleasure to use. The stereoscope body is made of mahogany wood, in very good condition and with the beautiful reddish color that characterizes this material. The stereoscope includes a curious system to visualize the plates. The user must remove the tray with the plates properly placed and put it on top of the appliance. Then, it is enough to gradually remove the base of the tray so that the plates fall in front of the eyepieces with the lenses. Once visualized, the plates will fall back into the lower tray to be able to repeat the whole process. The system works very good and allows to visualize the plates comfortably, keeping them always organized. The stereoscope has black Bakelite eyepieces and original lenses, as well as a plate with the name of the model: LE MULTIPHOTE - STEREO - AUTO - CLASSEUR. In addition, it is presented with 24 original Glass photographic plates of the time. This ancient automatic stereoscope is an authentic jewel of the early 20th century. History of stereoscopy The principle of stereoscopy has been known for centuries, but it was not until the 19th century that the first viewer was produced, the work of Sir Charles Wheatstone. However, already in the 16th century the first devices were made that allowed to contemplate images with a certain degree of depth. In 1834, James Elliot conceived the idea of building an apparatus that allowed to visualize two different images simultaneously and there create an impression of perspective. However, it was not built until three years after the launch of the first stereoscope, designed by Wheatstone in 1838. During the 19th century, devices proliferated that allowed the plates to be viewed with increasing clarity, and during the first half of the 20th century the stereoscopic viewers...
