  • Antique Polo Mallet by J. Salter, Aldershot.
    Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Early Vintage Polo Mallet, J. Salter. A good late 19th century polo mallet with a round bamboo root head with original rattan, mallacca cane bamboo shaft with original handle made by James Salter & Son, Aldershot, No. 52. It has a round makers stamp 'J. Salter & Son, Aldershot' and ' Made Entirely By J. Salter & Son'. A great looking vintage polo mallet. The sport of polo enjoyed much popularity amongst British Army officers, which explains why James Salter was based in Aldershot, home of the British Army. James already had a reputation for repairing polo mallets so in 1883 at 23 High Street, Aldershot, he opened his shop, it still bears the name J. Salter and Sons. He became famous throughout the world for his high-quality goods, leading players would only use Salter equipment. The secret of his success was using only the best materials available and always trying to improve his products. When James retired his sixth child, Sydney, took over the running of the business. The business continued to grow, as did the clientele. The list of Salter's customers was very impressive, and they supplied equipment to high ranking military personnel, Dukes, Maharajas, Princes and Kings, all of it made in the Aldershot premises. Salter & Sons of Aldershot were also the sole makers for Bicycle polo sticks...

Antique map titled 'Das Mitternächtige Theil des Alten Asien'. This sheet of five miniature maps describes the northern part of Asia in classical times, perhaps circa 150 AD. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He also served under the King of Portugal, before returning to France, and his appointment to the court of Louis XIV. His military engineering and mathematical background led to his position teaching mathematics at court. His major publications were Description de L'Univers (1683) in 5 volumes, and Les Travaux de Mars ou l'Art de la Guerre (1684) in 3 volumes. His Description de L'Universe contains a wide variety of information, including star maps...
