Antique Black Forest Carving under Dome, Anatomy of a Bird, French

About

Black Forest carving and flycatcher taxidermy on wooden base under glass dome. The original carving depicts two anthropomorphic woodland creatures reviewing a diagram of a bird's anatomy; taxidermy and dome are contemporary additions. The "Black Forest" style is thought to have originated in Switzerland, mostly from the Trauffer family. It is easy to identify the style: animals that play instruments, climb trees, hold benches or beg are part of the legs, seats and stands that make up the furniture. Pieces were not signed.
