Stunning Mid-1800s Handcrafted Embroidery of Jesus' Descent from the Cross

About the Item

Large work of religious art, after Daniele da Volterra (1509-1566). This all handcrafted work of art is both stunning and meaningful and the workmanship truly is from a bygone era. According to the former owner, this large & beautiful work of religious art was purchased from the depot of the Janskerk in the Dutch city of Haarlem (after which Harlem, New York was named). This church with its adjacent monastery was built in the years 1310-1318 and in 1936 the ancient building was saved by the city council, restored and since then in use as the city archive. We trust the former owner, but we cannot verify the provenance of this piece. What we are certain of, is that this 19th century, hand embroidered gem is in its original, ebonized frame of solid teak wood and it also is behind the original, antique glass panel. The history is special and the originality of this piece makes it even better, but what this piece really is about is the incredible workmanship and ofcourse what the image stands for. We have added extra close up photos so that you can see that even the grid on which this image was embroidered is all hand knotted. It must have taken months rather than weeks to create this antique from start to finish. Integrated in the embroidery are also silver colored metal and blue colored glass beads that highlight certain parts of this powerful composition. It is after Daniele da Volterra, who's real name was Daniele Ricciarelli (from the Italian town of Volterra), a master painter and sculptor from the Renaissance era. If you are looking for a one of a kind, handcrafted, striking and meaningful work of religious art to grace your living space then maybe you can be the next custodian. At our price, we think it is great value for money. Especially when taken into account that perfect packing and free delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days are complimentary. Maximum height x width x depth: 32.9 x 26 x 1.57 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for artistic and meaningful and for craftsmanship of years gone by. • Stunning Handcrafted Late 1800s Gothic Casket with Peacock & Gargoyle Sculptures
    Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful and rare Gothic Revival treasure box with bronze handle. If you are a collector of antique boxes and/or if you are looking for an extraordinary jewelry box to grace your credenza or side table then this unique and top quality made specimen in the Gothic style could be perfect. Gothic Revival boxes are very hard to find and we have never seen one with such prodigious carvings on all sides. The unique and cat-like dragon gargoyles (with fangs) that look like they are carrying this casket, are just some of the stunningly carved and detailed sculptures that make this antique rarity even more artistic and impressive. Another great feature are the peacock sculptures. In Christianity the peacock is the symbol of purity. Christians believe that once someone has passed their soul rises and goes to heaven. This is why in earlier times Christians would spread the feathers of a peacock over the deceased since it symbolized a pure soul that was immune to corruption. The peacock also represents immortality, resurrection, and the spiritual teachings of Jesus Christ and the Christian church. Have you also noticed the top quality details on both ends of the bronze handle on top? The quality of that ornamental work is of the absolute highest standard also. There are many more incredibly beautiful, hand carved details and together they show that no expense was spared to create one of the most amazing Gothic caskets...

  • Large Antique Crucifix with a Hand Carved & Bronzed Wooden Corpus of Jesus 1800s
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and large size, antique corpus of Christ on a blackened oak cross. If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. Thanks to the pair of metal hooks on the back, safely mounting this ecclesiastical antique tight to your wall will be very easy to do. Our fair price for this one of a kind crucifix even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth of the cross & corpus: 56 x 30.5 x 8 inches. Maximum height x width of the antique wooden corpus...
