Vintage Raven Taxidermy on Root Sculpture

About the Item

This unique sculptural composition beautifully pairs the naturalism of taxidermy with an abstract 19th century Chinese wooden scholars' root. The raven is poised as is mid-caw, ready to burst into flight. Several Chinese legends reference the raven living in the sun or carrying the sun across the sky. In Chinese art, ravens are sometimes used as symbols of filial piety because these intelligent birds were believed to feed and take care of their parents in old age. This raven comes with great provenance from a respected collector of fantastic curiousities
