About the Item

The full title of this Britain's set #2084 is "Color Party of the Scots Guards: Ensigns with King's and Regimental Colors and four Sergeants". It is a six-piece set in hollow-cast lead alloy. It was made in London between 1956 and 1959, as evidenced by the lead flags rather than the tin flags used prior to and just after WWII. The soldiers were hand-painted, making each figure unique, The two color-bearer officers wear white harnesses to hold the flags. The sergeants wear maroon shoulder sashes and gold chevrons on their sleeves, and they carry rifles at the slope. There is no box. The figures are in good condition with minor play-wear of slight paint chipping, which is normal for this type of toy. The Scots Guards regiment was commissioned by King Charles I in 1642 as a bodyguard. It was disbanded after the English Civil War, but was recommissioned with the Restoration of King Charles II. The figures in this set are attired in early 20th century parade dress when King George V was Colonel-in-Chief. Distinguishing them from other Guards regiments is the bearskin cap with no plume--other regiments sported varying colors of feather plumes on their bearskin caps. The Scots Guards regiment saw service in the English Civil War, the Peninsular Campaign, at Waterloo, in Ireland, Canada, Egypt, Sudan, in the Crimean War, Boer War, WWI, WWII and in Iraq and Afghanistan, among many other events and places. The present Colonel-in-Chief is Queen Elizabeth II. These were terrific toys in their day and they are avidly collected now because of their quality, accuracy and charm and because production in this material ended in 1966. They make wonderful gifts.
