About the Item

A pair of Cary’s terrestrial and celestial globes, each globe enclosed by an engraved brass vertical meridian ring as well as a by a horizontal wooden meridian ring depicting a Gregorian calendar with complimentary astrological signs, each globe supported by a turned column with tripod supports and terminating in pad feet, joined by a stretcher and centered by a compass. Terrestrial globe inscribed, Cary’s New Terrestrial Globe delineated from the best Authorities extant; Exhibiting the late Discoveries towards the NORTH POLE, and every improvement in Geography to the present Time. London: Made and sold by J.W. Cary, 86 St. James Street March 15th, 1827. Celestial Globe inscribed, Cary’s New Celestial Globe , on which are correctly laid down upwards of 3500 stars Selected from the most accurate observations and calculated for the year 1800. With the extent of each constellation precisely defined By Mr. Gilpin of the Royal Society. Made and sold by J. W. Cary, Strand London Jan 1, 1810. Please note that the restoration of globes such as these is time-consuming and expensive. These particular globes have been carefully and beautifully restored. Height: 24” Globe diameter: 12”. Celestial globes date back to antiquity, while terrestrial globes were first used in the 2nd century BC. During the Middle Ages globe manufacture ceased. The art was revived in the 1400s as European interest in the Arts and Sciences once again flourished.
