These bookends made of volcanic stone are part of our Sacred Ritual Objects collection, the first by EWE Studio. Created out of fascination by the evolving skills of the artisans and their successful execution of exquisite objects, designed to ignite a connection with the divine. The collection reflects how religious and cultural syncretism shaped the expression of Mexican craft heritage. It explores dialogues between diverse religious beliefs in Mexico and the rituals surrounding those traditions. The diverse religions practiced in Mexico through centuries and the symbolism surrounding those beliefs, inspired the form of all Símbolo pieces. How they were the quick way to communicate often complex ideas and represent the transition between the finite and the infinite world of the deities. Símbolo objects are crafted in bronze or hand carved in native volcanic stone or marble.

EWE STUDIOView Profile
EWE is a design studio based in Mexico City, dedicated to creating handcrafted limited edition sculptural and functional objects. We are devoted to the preservation and advancement of Mexico’s rich artisan heritage, and we embrace new mediums and languages for the execution of each piece. With a desire to reflect tradition as part of the natural flow of design, we praise diverse techniques, blend primitive roughness with pristine surfaces and use natural empathic materials that appeal to the senses. Mexican history is our inspiration for forging new ideas that have substance and meaning. Together with the unique skills of each artisan, we collaborate to transform glass, wood, metal, textile and stone, among other raw materials, into magnificent and original contemporary pieces of collectible design.
