A fine French terrestrial globe published by Girard et Barrère, Géographes-Éditeurs, Paris, and printed by Michard. The twelve paper gores are applied over a plaster sphere, showing the principal sea routes, ocean currents, and territorial boundaries of the postwar period. The surface is mounted within a simple brass meridian and supported by a turned and joined walnut stand with three shaped legs united by a circular stretcher.
Curator’s Note:
Girard et Barrère were active in Paris from the early twentieth century through the 1940s, producing a range of educational and decorative globes distinguished by clear typography and fine cartographic detail. This example dates to the years between the First and Second World Wars, a period marked by rapid geopolitical change and renewed public interest in geographic study.
Condition: Some yellowing and mild foxing, trace craquelure throughout and wear to the map with minor rubbing and light seam lift; spot loss in Russia in Berezov Plaine; legs slightly out of square when viewed straight on; one nut missing; brass with mild tarnish; light wear and finish loss to feet.
