Oversised" Library- Desk "Terrestrial Globe, New York, 19th Century

About

Remarkable oversized end of 19th century "Library / Desk "terrestrial globe, circa 1880. Diameter: 30 inch. The globe stands on four wood carved legs in the shape of lions (almost 4 feet tall) 4 ft x 4 ft square wood support. The papered horizon ring with degrees of amplitude and azimuth, compass direction and houses of zodiac resting on solid carved oak with X-support. The four carved lion's heads are surmounted on each angle by a figure of "Putti" blowing the four directions of winds and their names are sculpted below each of them. The globe itself is made of finely engraved gores and is encircled by an engraved brass ring and meridian circle with graduated degrees. On the globe, the MMA or table of equation of time. We can read: Showing the difference of time between the clock and sun as well as the sun's declination for every day in the year. (Following, the explanations how to use the table.) Franklin Globe from Nims & Knight Troy, NY was in the second part of the 19th century available in different size and the diameter 30 inches with bases in different material whose wood. In 1890 the fabrication name went back to "NB NIMS & Co."
