An antique Ashford black marble obelisk from a UK private collection. This striking obelisk has a centrally mounted ivory register with a malachite surround and a beautiful floral design in pietra dura, fitted with a mercury thermometer in Fahrenheit. The unique method of pietra dura, meaning hardstone, refers to a Florentine mosaic technique, a descendant of the Roman era, sees carefully sawn pieces of gemstones fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle to form an image. Suitable for any interior, this would make a striking statement on a sideboard or mantel. Additional Information This item contains elephant ivory material.
