About the Item
A Pair Of 19th Century Black Variegated Marble Grand Tour Obelisks with applied bronze finials and hooks. Each features the profiles in relief of Greek philosophers. One with bust of Diogenes over stepped marble base, the other with bust of Socrates over stepped alabaster base. The obelisk form is a classical architectural motif, originally derived from ancient Egypt and later adopted by Greeks and Romans. The profiles of Socrates and Diogenes are carved into the marble and capture the distinctive facial features.
