Ponti Style Parchment Magazine Rack 1950s
About the Item
A rare and highly refined modernist magazine rack attributed to Aldo Tura and distributed through Rosenthal, likely produced in Italy during the 1950s. The design—minimal yet sculptural—features angled supports meant to cradle magazines elegantly beside a lounge chair or reading corner. With its clean lines and sophisticated profile, the piece reflects the elevated aesthetic sensibility shared by Tura and other Italian modernists of the period.
Though unsigned, this example once retained a retailer’s label from R. Pecchiolo Concessionario, a high-end furnishing shop based in Buenos Aires, with the Rosenthal logo prominently featured in the center of the tag—a strong indicator of the rack’s international distribution through Rosenthal’s modern design program. Though the original sticker had come loose, it has been reattached and shows the Rosenthal logo alongside the Buenos Aires retailer R. Pecchiolo Concessionario. At the time of acquisition, another labeled example of this design was on the market. Its clean geometry and refined form have also led to past attributions of Gio Ponti.
Aldo Tura, best known for his bold use of parchment, lacquer, and subtly eccentric silhouettes, occasionally worked in more restrained idioms like this piece, which shares the same rigorous attention to proportion and craftsmanship. This design stands out as especially forward-thinking for the era—its angular lines and lightweight visual presence prefigure the minimalist tendencies of 1960s design.
Ideal for collectors of rare Italian modernism, this piece would complement interiors styled with Ponti, Frattini, or Robsjohn-Gibbings, and is equally at home in a gallery-like modern space or layered vintage environment.
