Regency Mahogany Boat Shaped Canterbury

About the Item

A very good quality early 19th century Regency period mahogany boat shaped canterbury with pierced carrying handle over four divisions and elegant turned upright supports, having one drawer to frieze with replacement brass knob, raised on elegant turned legs and original brass castors.  It is widely believed that canterburies are named as such due to the first object of this design being commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the late 18th century. Although the original format is believed to have had divisions in both directions and purposed for the storage of cutlery in the dining room, the design soon progressed and was adapted, resulting in them being manufactured mainly for the storage of sheet music from the early 19th century onwards. Nowadays of course Canterbury's are the perfect object for collecting up all those magazines and newspapers which are lying around in the living room, study, office or any other area around the home and storing them tidily away whilst still retaining relatively easy access to them. This Canterbury is a particularly nice one, constructed from good quality, rich mahogany timber in the early Regency period. It has a nice boat shaped design and a pierced carrying handle, both of which are generally regarded as particularly desirable features.  Circa 1820. Measures: Height 20in. Width 18.5in. Depth 14in.
