19th Century Blue, Red, and Ivory Caucasian Kuba Rug

About the Item

The careful use of red, blue and ivory set the tone for this Shirvan scatter. The red saw-toothed lattice creates a push-pull layering dynamic with the diamond shapes as the viewer tries to decide whether the field color is the blue receding into the background or the whether the blue diamonds with their variegated flowers blooms were laid carefully on the red field. The blue of the field is expanded to two of the five borders to balance the ivory background of the main border and the two smallest guard borders.

  • Caucasian Seichour Kuba rug
    Located in San Francisco, CA
Kuba rugs designated as Seichor, are known for their distinctive vibrant palette, with prominent medium blues, scarlet reds and accents in pink and gold. Stylistically, these pieces often reflect the European and particularly French taste of the late nineteenth century and this can be seen in the almost Rococo articulation of the lattice and palmettes drawn in this rug. This piece, however, is well grounded within the weaving traditions of the Caucasus. Ultimately, it is a small, highly stylized rendition of the classical Caucasian “Dragon Carpets...
