Magnificent Chinese Coromandel 12 panel screen. The exceptional quality of the incised lacquer decoration and the well preserved colors distinguish this fine example. The elaborate palace scene with it's intricate architecture frames a number of events including nobles on horseback with attendants, musicians in a courtyard, children at play. The reverse side decorated with exotic birds and luxuriant blossoming vines and foliage. The border depicts Taoist emblems and "The Hundred Antiquities" (decorative motifs mostly from the K'ang-hsi period including archaic bronzes and scholarly objects). See "Chinese Furniture" by Michel Beurdeley plt. 184 for a similar example formerly C.T. Loo Collection, Paris.
