Mid-Century Modern More Furniture and Collectibles

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

1960s Italian Three Piece Orange Genuine Hand Carved Alabaster Smoking Set
Located in Haarlem, NL
Very decorative 1960s Italian hand carved orange alabaster smoking set by Romano Bianchi. Consists of a heavy ashtray, also very useful as trinket dish or vide-poche. A table lighter (which also fits a wax tea light candle). And a very pretty lidded hinged box, which originally would have held cigarettes but also could be used to keep jewellery or little treasures in. Cigarette sales peaked in the 20th century, people were allowed to smoke in the office, the cinema, at restaurants, indoors and outdoors. Once women were able to smoke freely, smoking became a social norm and in general it was considered an act of elegance and sophistication. Businessmen in the 1960s were rarely seen without a cigarette in their hand. So needles to say you needed pretty smoking accessories...

Leather Kangaroo Magazine Pouch Holder by Dimitri Omersa, 1970s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A beautiful large cognac colored leather Kangaroo magazine holder / sculpture by Dimitri Omersa, circa 1970s. Attractive light patina throughout, this charismatic leather animal can serve so many different uses, and makes a fantastic companion while also being a wonderful collectors piece to cherish. Some creative ways to use this Omersa is to hold magazines or small books / pamphlets. Or a bouquet of flowers, examples of these two uses can be found in the photos. Another idea which we did not photograph is for cables and cords - consider your laptop or cell phone cables, they can sit in the pouch when not in use, and can even wrap over or around the arms to manage the cords from getting tangled. Other uses could be simply as a collectible sculpture placed on a credenza, sideboard, bookshelf or mantle, on the floor as a floor sculpture or as a friendly companion for an otherwise lonely house dog or cat, or by the front door as a greeter to your guests and when you return home after a long day. We think it's great to name your Omersa, as many Omersa owners do, and we also believe every home needs at least one Omersa. Omersa's have so much personality and character - each one was hand-made (so every one is unique, just like us) of the highest quality leather, beautifully stained and waxed, this one approximately 45-55 years ago, and each of the years this one has lived - it has developed its own stories to tell through its gorgeous patina, it's no wonder most Omersa owners have developed personal relationship with theirs - not too much different than a house pet. We love our personal Omersa's that we keep at home, they always make us smile. A client of ours got one after his dog had passed, he said he wasn't ready yet for another - so an Omersa became the perfect friend at a time in need. From 1927 though 1950 leather pigs using scrap leather from hand made luggage were made by "Old Bill" for the department store Liberty of London. Around 1958 the business was transferred to Dimitri Omersa when Old Bill retired, and it was at this time that Dimitri came up with the ideas for other leather animals. Around 1963 Dimitri's leather animals caught the eye of Abercrombie and Fitch, at that time purveyor to the fantasies of the rich and famous. The animals were advertised in the A&F catalog from the mid 1960’s through to the late 1980’s. As you can see in our photos, we have a large collection of Omersa leather...

Large Vintage Cartier Jewelry Elephant Silk Scarf with Irish Linen Pillow
Located in Belfast, Northern Ireland
Katie Larmour Studio is the original vintage scarf pillow maker. Gaining notability for her unique idea and creations back in 2013 - featured in the likes of the Financial Times, and first selling here on 1stdibs in 2016 - our creations are of the absolute top most quality, craftsmanship and finesse. Thank-you for looking. Title: Large Vintage Cartier Jewelry Elephant Silk Scarf with Irish Linen Cushion Pillow Description: Large custom made one-of-a-kind luxury cushion (pillow) created from an exquisite rare vintage pure silk Cartier fashion scarf in a striking print named ‘La Route des Indes’, translating to English as ‘The India Road’. It illustrates exotic elephants in procession adorned with fabulous opulent jewels. They spiral around the square frame one behind the other whimsically ascending in scale. The most magnificent of all leading at the front in a statuesque pose and elaborate decoration. Their eyes are pave set with previous stones of emerald and amethyst and the gold elephants continue along the boarder as well. Cartier is a luxury Parisian empire which originated in 1847 with Louis-François Cartier and is recognised all around the world for their high end creations. The lavishly bejewelled exotic oriental creatures appear to be a reference to the brand’s signature necklaces, bracelets and earrings; ‘Tanjore’, and ‘Djigar’ necklaces, “Rajastan’ bracelet and ‘Gupta’ brooch. This particular peachy coral pink with jade green accents and a glorious subtle sheen is one of the most spectacular examples we have come across. The fabric was personally hand-picked by Katie at antiques market ‘Marche aux Puces Saint-Ouen’ on the outskirts of Paris. On a sumptuous silk soft to the touch. Backed in new 100% pure Irish linen, the aristocrat of textiles and certified by the Irish Linen Guild, lined in a layer of natural bamboo cloth...

Room Divider by Fred Leyman
Located in Stockholm, SE
Spectacular sculptural room divider by Fred Leyman, custom-made for Majorna Library in Gothenburg in 1963. This piece is one of four that are each unique, made from wrought iron and hardened leather. The room dividers were granted substantial public interest and the studies for them were subsequently exhibited at Liljevalchs Konsthall in 1966. They were returned to the artist in the 1990s and acquired by Nordlings from the Leyman family in 2016. Fred Leyman was a Swedish artist, schooled at the renowned Valand Art Academy in Gothenburg during the 1950s. Leyman worked in a distinctly modernist style influenced by the international modernist movement, music, political ideas and the environment in which he lived. He is best known for his around 40 large-scale sculptures erected in public spaces in Gothenburg and other parts of southwestern Sweden. Fred Leyman lived on the island of Orust with his wife and children, in accordance with what he found to be ”a good life” close to nature on a small farm with sheep and horses. He was also deeply interested in music, particularly traditional folk music. Both the open, marine landscape of Orust and the rhytmical qualitites in music were vital forces in his artistry and in the development of his personal style. Leyman used iron and steel and sometimes wood and leather in his sculptures. These are characterized by sharp and billowing graphic lines and the use of negative space, seemingly always reaching somewhere. It is an expression striking the perfect balance between abstract and concrete. Leyman’s materials of choice were particularly suitable for large and sustainable...
