Vintage Liberty of London Pineapple Silk Scarf and Irish Linen Cushion Pillow

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

Custom-made one-of-a-kind cushion (pillow) created from a fantastic vintage circa late 50s silk Liberty of London fashion scarf in a tropical design. An extremely unique and rare piece, discovered in Alfies Antique Market in London. Depicting juicy and ripe mellowed fruits in full bloom, it’s very soft and smooth to the touch with a subtle sheen and in perfect vintage condition. There is a painterly quality to both the fruits and the ground giving it an interesting texture. In strong bold colours it contrasts brilliantly with the freshness of the Irish linen back. Backed in new 100% pure Irish linen, the aristocrat of textiles, lined in a layer of natural bamboo wadding, filled with new plush duck feather insert and a concealed zip.

Founded by Arthur Liberty, the world famous British department store Liberty of London began trading in 1875 in a small shop called East India House, by the 1920s it was a leading establishment. Liberty was not a designer himself but a businessman who had a gift for recognising talent and new trends. By the 1950s the store had a seasonal brochure dedicated solely to it’s scarves and still today a third of the ground floor of it’s magnificent mock-Tudor London flagship store is devoted to scarves. As with many textile designers their names are never credited on their scarves. We have attributed this beauty to Althea McNisch, originally from Trinidad and Tobago coming to London in the 50s she was one of the first black British textile designers. Her first professional designs were for Liberty straight after graduating from the Royal College of art in 1957. McNisch added sunny, colourful Caribbean style prints to Britain's post-war textiles industry. A wonderful piece that would fit into a modern interior, especially as pineapples are making such a fashionable comeback.
