Hammered Silver Vase by Hirata Juko II

About the Item

Vase in a cylindrical, bottle-form, the sides finished in thin, vertical facets. Of uchidashi or hammered silver. Marked on the reverse: Jungin or Pure Silver and signed with a chiseled signature by the artist: Juko and with a kao (Hirata Juko II, the 8th generation Hirata master, died 1970). Showa era, circa 1955–1965. With the tomobako or original box, inscribed on the exterior of the lid: Gin Sei Tsuchi-mei Uchi(dashi) Kabin or Hammered Silver Vase with Hammer-patterning; and on the reverse of the lid signed: Hirata Juko Saku or Made by Hirata Juko and sealed: Juko. Hirata Juko II descended from a famous lineage of metal artists. The 6th generation, Hirata Soko, was also a hammering specialist who taught at the Tokyo School of Fine Art and in 1917 was made Teishitsu Gigei-in or Imperial Court Artist. The artist raised this vase from a heavy ingot of silver. Thinner walls would have been easier to work. Yet the heavier construction may also have allowed for deeper sculpting of the furrows. Rather than polish the surface like a mirror, he treats the track of the Hammer as ornament. The resulting facets shift direction and change in size, broader around the body of the vase and subtly decreasing in scale towards the neck and foot. Each long furrow dimples inward towards the center, with brighter, higher lines edging the sides. These long verticals waver delicately and frame a dappled pattern like water shivered by wind. Hirata Juko II envisioned a form both elegant and informal. At first glance the vase seems symmetrical, its elongated lines classically modernist. Then one looks at the wavering irregularity and sees the movement of light on water. Dimensions: 12” high x 5 ¼” diameter.
