20th Century Uzbek Cotton and Silk Ikat Chapan Robe
Located in London, GB
20th century Uzbek cotton and silk ikat chapan robe Uzbekistan, 20th Century Height 122cm, width 153cm Historically, an ikat chapan robe was a status symbol worn by nomadic tribes and settles in Uzbekistan as well as other Central Asian regions. Paired with belt, tunic, and trousers, the brightness of colours and intricacy of the embroidery were indicators of the wealth of the wearer. The robe in Mayfair Gallery’s collection is brightly coloured with large, red and yellow geometrical patterns on a cream-coloured base. The inside of the robe is also patterned, with red floral motifs formed in a geometrical and symmetrical pattern. The outside trim of this silk and cotton ikat chapan robe is elegantly embroidered with white and red patterns. Such embroidery carried symbolic meaning, protecting the wearer from evil spirits. The long sleeves are a beautiful design feature, intending to cover the wearer’s hands and protect them from cold temperatures. Worn by both men and women, this eye-catching Uzbek robe...

Antique Uzbek Suzani Embroidery Rug, c. 1800
Located in San Francisco, CA
Antique Uzbek Suzani Embroidery, c. 1800 Blending naturalism with ethereal fantasy, this spectacular embroidery or ‘suzani‘ from Central Asia conveys an aesthetic consistent with older examples of the genre. Certain features, most notably the vine-scroll, are reminiscent of the Samarkand school, while the drawing of the blossoms seems more prevalent in the repertoire of neighboring Shahrisabz. Indeed, this piece may in fact be a common ancestor to both. Splendid palmettes with flame-like tracery and bold swirling star-centered blossoms alternate within the border. Vegetal scroll meanders throughout—drawn with several shades of green conveying, if not a sense of shadowing, definite and deliberate tonalities of light and dark. The central hourglass form, idiosyncrasies of drawing, and arrangement of blossoms in the field imbue a sense of classicism rivaling and surpassing older Ottoman and Persian models. Embroidery Rug...

Floral Bolinpush Suzani Textile From Central Asia
Located in London, GB
Floral Bolinpush suzani textile from Central Asia Uzbekistan, Early 20th Century Length 161cm, width 161cm Exquisitely handcrafted and embroidered in the early 20th century, this Bolinpush suzani hails from the historic town of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The textile’s design centres on a petite marigold bloom, with larger, similar forms alternating between rich maroon and marigold shades emanating from it. Surrounding these are abstract, symmetrical black floral motifs within a maroon border, complemented by repeated black and maroon patterns. The suzani is framed by embroidered borders in maroon and cream, before ending in a striking, black-coloured textile edge. Bolinpush suzanis are culturally significant textiles, traditionally used during Central Asian weddings...

Antique Hand-Embroidered Cotton Suzani, Buhkara, Uzbekistan
Located in London, GB
Antique hand-embroidered cotton Suzani, Buhkara, Uzbekistan Uzbekistan, 19th century Length 227cm, width 161cm This exquisite Suzani textile was handcrafted in 19th century Bukhara, Uzbekistan. The Suzani features an interesting geometric design and a vibrant array of colours, with red flowers, typical of the Bukhara region, taking centre stage amidst lush green vines, flowers and leaves. Additional elements in yellow, blue, and red adorn the textile. Suzanis are large embroidered textile panels that originated from nomadic tribes in Central European countries. Primarily used as protective covers within yurts, they served to safeguard belongings and other textiles. Traditionally, suzanis would be made in multiple parts, allowing several people to work on its creation. Signs of such collaborative work are visible on the join marks in the piece and contribute to the striking composition of the Suzani. Usually made as part of a wedding dowry, suzanis were believed to bring good fortune to the bride and groom in their joint family life. The creation of a Suzani began with the careful drawing of a pattern onto the fabric, a feature still visible on the one in Mayfair Gallery...
