Tiffany Studios Jeweled Drophead Dragonfly Table Lamp
Located in Dallas, TX
Tiffany Studios Leaded Glass and Gilt Bronze Jeweled Drophead Dragonfly Table Lamp, circa 1910. At the turn of the century, Clara Driscoll, head of the women’s glass cutting department and the brains behind some of Tiffany’s most iconic shades introduced the “Drophead Dragonfly” to the world. Unable to cut the pieces of glass small enough to give the desired lacy effect to the wings of the dragonfly, Driscoll came up with the idea of using a brass filigree overlay that would be soldered over top of the glass wings, giving a much more intricate appearance. These filigrees had previously been used on smaller decorative items but were a new concept in lamp design. The Dragonfly became one of Tiffany’s first recorded leaded shades, shown as early as 1899 by Art Nouveau tastemaker Siegfried Bing at Grafton Galleries in London The design won her the bronze medal at the 1900 world's fair a year later. As the son of Tiffany & Co-founder Charles Lewis Tiffany, jewels to Louis Comfort Tiffany were as water is to a fish. It is no wonder with this background that Tiffany made the bold decision to employ Leo Popper & Sons of New York City as its producer of glass jewels Popper was founded in 1880 to produce imitation stones for costume jewelry, and Tiffany’s entrepreneurial prowess saw the possibility of using jewels in leaded glass shades. On the subject, Tiffany wrote: “Anyone who has seen the great rose windows of Chartres has, intuitively or otherwise, understood the relationship between glass and jewels. Designed to refract light prismatically, and placed to raise heads beatifically, they resemble nothing so much as magnificent celestial jewels.” It was likely for this reason that model no. 1507 was Tiffany’s favorite. More than any of its variants, the shade was spangled with a wide assortment of cabochon topaz glass jewels. This lamp features a unique example of Tiffany Studios' iconic Drophead Dragonfly shade depicting a swarm of nine descending dragonflies, each with a distinct combination of body and eye color. Dragonflies, each with wings of strikingly mottled apple green and deep red and a unique combination of eye and body color. The ground is a warm saffron yellow shaded up to rich butter yellow, punctuated by twinkling amber cabochons jewels and topped by geometric bands of purple mauve and mint green. The vibrancy and variation in the dragonfly glass...

Internally Decorated "Aquamarine" Tiffany Favrile Glass Vase
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Tiffany Studios, circa 1912 Rare Internally Decorated "Aquamarine" exhibition quality Tiffany Favrile Glass Vase Engraved L.C. Tiffany-Favrile 5822 G, with firms paper label Height 12 in. (30.48 cm.), Diameter 5 in. (12.70 cm.) Provenance Christie's New York Important Tiffany Glass from The Minna Rosenblatt Gallery December 10,2003 Lot 454 LITERATURE: John Loring, Louis Comfort Tiffany at Tiffany & Co., New York, 2002,Martin Eidelberg, Tiffany Favrile Glass and the Quest for Beauty, New York, 2007 Catalogue note: AQUAMARINE One of the last major innovations in Tiffany Studios' glassmaking was the introduction of Aquamarine glass about 1912. The Tiffany craftsmen had been using paperweight techniques for a decade (works in which floral motives were worked in hot glass and then encased within layers of additional glass). Those made around 1900 generally had a shimmering golden background but, around 1910, this changed to a clear, transparent glass. Aquamarine glass introduced a subtle, green-tinged material that suggested a watery realm. Cased within the glass are yellow flowered plants like the one in this vase, floating in an aqueous world is this water lily. To further the illusion of watery depths, the glass itself is quite thick offering the viewer different perspectives such as one has when peering through actual water. Tiffany Studios' difficulty in making this glass was constantly emphasized. Not only was there the difficulty of properly annealing the many layers but equally challenging was the manipulation of the weighty glass ball while it was still hot and fluid. These technical difficulties caused much breakage, and the Aquamarine vases were costly as a result. Several examples were shown at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco. Martin Eidelberg Literature Elizabeth Lounsbery, "Aquamarine Glass," American Homes and Gardens, vol. 10, December 1913, p. 419 (for a period illustration of other aquamarine vases) Albert Christian Revi, American Art Nouveau Glass, Camden, NJ, 1968, p. 61, pl. 94 (for an illustration of an aquamarine glass doorstop...

Maurice Dufrene Gilt Sculpted Vitrine
Located in Philadelphia, PA
French Early Classic Art Deco cabinet/vitrine by Maurice Dufrene, circa 1912, in gilt sculpted wood . This cabinet is pictured in Dufrène's own Hôtel Parrticulier (private residence), at 22, rue Bayard in Paris, taken in 1918 (see photo below). The lemonwood version of this cabinet was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1912 and is now on permanent display at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris (see photo below). This cabinet is in original condition and a scan of the original drawing is shown here. Maurice Dufrêne (1876 - 1955) One of the premiere French designers of the 20th Century, Maurice Dufrene was born in Paris in 1876. He was educated at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. By 1899, at the age of just 23, he became the director and manager of La Maison Moderne. This shop represented an association of artists who were working together to create designs which could be produced in multiples. Dufrene's work was first shown at salons in 1902 and from 1903 he regularly exhibited at Salon d'Automne and Salons of Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. At the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which would later give the movement "Art Deco" its name), Dufrene's designs included luxury boutiques, the living room of Une Ambassade Francaise pavilion, the music salon...
