Bespoke Yellow and Grey Wool Handwoven Rug or Kilim, Natural Dye

About

Inspired by the physics of light and motion. This abstract design creates both a sense of movement and stability. The asymmetrical design is meant to reinforce our contemporary use of space, ever changing, always moving, informal. The entire process of creating this rug was done in the artist's Brooklyn studio. From dying the yarn, to weaving and finishing the piece. No part of the process is outsourced. Each work produced by the artist is a bespoke heirloom piece. The rug is woven with traditional kilim techniques, using interlocking yarn to add strength and stability. Strong enough to withstand daily traffic. As a handmade piece this rug may include minor imperfections representing the true nature of the natural materials and techniques. The back of the rug has been finished so the piece may be reversed. Both ends finished with hem stitch and 4" fringe. Each color included in this rug was hand-dyed by the artist to achieve the subtle variety in tones using natural dyes. The yellow tones were achieved through a combination of weld and marigold, while the greys were created with logwood, tannin, and iron. While traditional dye recipes call for precise measurements of the dye-stuffs, the artist takes a more free-form approach which results in a much more painterly quality to the colors. The wool was sourced from the weaving village of Teotitlan del Valle in Oaxaca Mexico. The wool is used for weaving traditional Zapotec rugs. Processed in a raw form, the yarn is incredibly sturdy, but contains some small inclusions. Note: Natural dyes are very responsive to different types of light. The color tones and hues will vary depending on whether your space is lit with fluorescent, incandescent or natural light. If you are interested in color matching please request more photos. Measures: 59" x 89" x 4" fringe on both ends.

About The Maker

Andrew Boos

Andrew Boos

View Profile
Andrew Boos is an artist and bespoke rug designer based in Brooklyn, NY. His work is inspired by the physics of light and space, exploring those interactions through the use of line, shape and color. He hand dyes his yarn to achieve subtle variations in tone. This allows for a much freer use of color, more akin to paintings than traditional textiles. The designs are composed on the loom and handwoven by the artist using traditional kilim and tapestry techniques. Starting from a central theme involving the interaction of shape and color, elements are added or subtracted as the piece progresses, allowing for spontaneity and freedom throughout the weaving process. Each piece is one of a kind.
