About the Item

INDIA woollen carpet by George J. Sowden for Post Design collection/Memphis A woollen carpet handcrafted by different Nepalese artisans. Made in a limited edition of 36 signed, numbered examples. As the carpet is made by hand, there are slight variations in the dimensions of the single items. The lengthy manufacturing process starts with the shearing of the traditionally reared sheep. The wool is then spun and dyed, and the carefully selected wool fibres are washed. The knots used by the craftsmen is the Tibetan “Senneh”, different from the Persian and the Turkish one. The rug is realized in Yum quality. The carpets made in this way are brightly coloured, and each pattern is unique. The carpets may be made in different sizes on request, but will always be produced in the proportions shown in the catalogue. The product is purchased with authenticity certificate and guarantee stamp. Additional Information: Collection: Materialism Designer: George J. Sowden Year: 1985 Dimensions: W 200, H 200 cm Price: does not include VAT George Sowden was born in Leeds, UK in 1942. He studied architecture at Gloucestershire College of Art in the 1960s. He moved to Milano in 1970 where he started working with Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti. In 1981, he was one of the co-founders of the Memphis Group, the design movement that had a significant impact on design aesthetics in the eighties. The same year he founded his design studio Sowden Design, and has since collaborated with numerous world famous companies. George Sowden has received numerous awards. Post Design is a brand owned by Memphis Srl company. Memphis Milano brand was founded in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass and a group of designers and once ended in 1988, Memphis company decided not to use the same brand for future and new products. While Memphis Milano aimed at the expression of one single language, Post Design brand shows the personality of the single designers, even if many of them were belonging to Memphis Milano, but in a new and multilanguage key. What Sottsass and the other designers wanted to meet under the Post Design brand is a number of collections with its own style and life. It is an ambitious project of open investigation into the future, aimed at opening up new paths and recording changes in progress.
