Antique Caucasian Gendje Rug

About the Item

Gendje rugs are woven in the southwest Caucasus, surrounded by the prolific weaving centers of Kazak, Karabagh, and Shirvan. A major railway line that ran from Tiflis to Baku passed through this area, and thus it became a major market or trading post for all of the weavings from the surrounding areas. The rugs woven here borrow the structure and geometric designs found in Kazak rugs, but they avoid having the larger medallions associated with that type of rug. The colors used tend to be lighter and paler than those found in Kazaks. The rosettes seen in the diamond medallions of this rug are similar to those found in both Eagle Kazak and Karabagh rugs. 8' 7" x 3' 11".
