About the Item

This rare antique Caucasian Shirvan prayer rug (c. 1890) is an exceptional example of symbolic Caucasian textile art — more narrative manuscript than mere furnishing. Measuring 5' × 5'9", the rug presents an asymmetrical, highly unusual composition in which devotional structure blends with mythic storytelling. The field depicts the Caspian Sea with dragons rising from the horizon into the blue Caucasian sky, surrounded by a richly coded vocabulary of ritual and prosperity motifs. Each emblem carries intention: the comb for purification, the ceremonial earring for celebration, thunder and rain for abundance, pomegranate trees for youth and fruitfulness, and fantastical water creatures for mysticism. Remarkably, the rug includes both Christian and Islamic inscriptions along with a woven calendar — a rare synthesis of spiritual and cultural worlds. Woven upside down for proper orientation during meditation, it reflects the contemplative function of such textiles. A true collector’s piece, this Shirvan prayer rug offers historical depth, ethnographic significance, and museum-level rarity — an object where design, belief, and narrative are inseparably one.
