Late 19th Century Light Red Akstafa Rug

About the Item

This long and narrow Akstafa rug uses one of the more popular designs for the type, a column of eight-pointed stars joined by small stylized trees. Fantastic birds are drawn on either side of the trees, as an array of majestic geometric elements fills the indigo blue field. Pairs of human figures stand atop horses and two figures are drawn at the bottom next to hookahs. In true Akstafa spirit, the palette is light but rich in variation, with no fewer than four different blues. A colorful classic 'Holbein' border, derived from older Anatolian models, frames this happy Caucasian piece.
