About the Item

"Zitanpixel Dark Pink Roses mod. 2A" is part of a series of gipsy style rugs that Stephan Hamel has re-elaborated, turning the carpets into unique pieces of art. The carpets were hand knotted in sheep’s wool between the 1920s and 1970s of the 20th century, in country villages in the easternmost part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, according to ancient artisan manufacturing processes, and mainly with flower and geometrical decorative motifs. These rugs are the result of an almost total careful restoration work by master handicraftsmen, inspired by the art of the Japanese Kintsugi. Every single imperfection has been exalted in order to convey a greater uniqueness to the fabric. Rugs are framed with a fur border, which is a natural extension of the wool thread used to interweave them, becoming also a breaking element. The long hair is opposed to the short one of the surface of the rugs. It is a ‘wild’ element that brings inside our so static houses, which are a metaphor of the constraints imposed by society, a very strong sense of freedom. Materials coming from the processing residues of Vibram, the world leader in the production of rubber soles, are placed on the back side of the rug, in order to give greater structural consistency to the fabric. The "Zitanpixel Dark Pink Roses" rug is a tribute both to nature and the feminine. On one hand, roses are a symbol of joy, roses create joy, and being originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary they become here a pagan symbol of motherhood, fertility and continuity. While on the other hand, the curvy and soft leaves represent the sinuosity and elasticity of woman body which can wave in a very natural way and can easily curve even if it is flat. The pixel pattern of the rug reminds to the 1930s and it seems to suggest how mathematical was the mind of the old ladies that handcrafted this gipsy textile.
