Fantastic Antique Beshir Gallery Carpet

About the Item

The dark red-brown field on this gallery carpet is closely covered by a Turkmen tribal geometric version of the classic Persian Herati design, overlaid by small octagonal motives. The borders show octagons and eight-fold divided squares. The red is abrashed and soft, tending toward brown. The light accents are in pale straw and ecru.

Beshir rugs are woven by the Beshir tribe of Turkmenistan in Central Asia. They are best known for their distinctive weaving style, in a region where most rugs produced by their neighbouring tribes can be recognised by their so-called elephant foot pattern and deep blues and reds. This 19th-century example features a pomegranate blossom motif, inspired by earlier weavings of the 18th Century, symbolising prosperity, longevity and fertility, with a muted aubergine grey field and a variety of earthy, vegetable-dyed colours in its design. Its weaving has a precision and clarity uncommon in carpets of its type - truly a carpet of one-of-a-kind craftsmanship and artistry. This Beshir carpet...
