Semi Antique Khotan Transitional Pink and Golden-Brown Wool Rug by Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Originating from East Turkestan between 1920-1940, this antique transitional Khotan rug from Rug & Kilim has an abundance of distinct Chinese imagery throughout its borders. Hand woven in high quality wool, the golden-brown medallion design of the vibrant pink field employs vase and geometric-floral imagery—with allusions to pomegranate and seedling imagery—symbolizing fertility and abundance. More uncommon is the use of wrapping characters in the three borders, featuring Chinese right-angle characters and rolling ruyi clouds, solidifying this Khotan rug’s place among a distinct group historically employing Oriental and Buddhist imagery. Quick and easy to clean.

  • Mid Century Khotan Transitional Pink and Beige Wool Rug by Rug & Kilim
Located in Long Island City, NY
Originating from East Turkestan in (year), this mid century transitional Khotan rug from Rug & Kilim features a finely woven, uncommonly repetitious all over field design. Hand woven in high quality wool, a unique contrast is employed between the non-outlined pink field symbols and the richly outlined depictions throughout the borders, likely intended to highlight the important regional symbolism in the center. The field celebrates continuously drawn pomegranates on branches with seedlings (important Khotan symbols of fertility and bounty) against the beige and earthen brown border, strongly resembling a harvest field. The multiple borders also wrap continuously around the field, but feature an assortment of eastern symbols such as royal Chinese...
