This hand-knotted wool antique Chinese Peking rug features a constellation of seven flowering vases floating on an abrashed ink blue field. The center vase contains blooming lotuses, which are seen to symbolize purity and perfection, since its clean vibrant blooms emerge from the mud of swamps and marshes. The smaller vases surrounding the center contain chrysanthemums, which represent long life, and peonies, which represent unparalleled beauty and honor. Sprigs of each of the three flowers adorn the border. The orderly composition in combination with its restrained color based around gorgeous blues and earthy neutrals gives the piece a refined and most elegant sensibility.
