Small Late 19th Century Chinese Carpet with Salmon Pink Ground

About the Item

In the vast range of Chinese carpets, all Chinese civilization is represented and in the elements that make up the design, all Chinese philosophy is represented, the religions with Buddhist and Taoist symbols, the various costumes of the Court and the gardens with their furnishings and accessories. In this small and precious carpet of the end of the century. XIX of the city of Beijing, the characterizing element of the decoration is the peach blossom which in the Chinese tradition represents abundance, long life and is even a symbol of female beauty; it is tradition, in fact, that during the Chinese New Year those who are looking for love buy a peach tree to keep at home. Another significant element is the endless knot that decorates the internal border in the four corners. It is a closed knot made up of lines intertwined at right angles. The endless knot is perhaps the most complex of Buddhist symbols to understand. It symbolizes the promise, the unity between compassion and infinite wisdom, i.e., without beginning or end. But, beyond the reading of the symbols represented, the balance of the decoration and the combination of colors of this carpet can be appreciated.
