Antique Navajo Rug Yei Navajo Rare Human Geometric Handmade Wool Ivory, 1940
Located in New York, NY
Navajo rug flat woven rug tapestry beige Measures: 4' x6' (3'11" x 5'7") 119cm x 170cm Circa 1920 "The woolen rug has a white background color on which are three stylized figures on each side of a center cornstalk. All are surrounded on three sides by a "guardian "figure - one side is the head and the body - the other side are the legs. The rug is a Navajo Yei rug. All the figures are holding prayer sticks; there are feathers attached to the elbows of the figures in a vertical line. The colors of the rug are white, red, maroon, blue, tan, brown, grey, orange, rust and gold. The most common type of Navajo Yei rug are those with a white background color. Navajo Yei rugs were made at Lukachukai or in the Shiprock area or even Ganado. It is a fact that a Navajo Yei rug with many Yei figures and many colors will garner the highest value. While Yei rugs are technically woven for the floor, they were often placed on couches, or hung on the wall like paintings, few actually touched the ground. The Yei figure is a frequently used pattern in Navajo rugs. Male Yei figures are generally pictured with round heads, and female Yei figures with square heads. Modern Yei rugs are more often pictorial compositions, showing a row of front-facing stylized stick figures with a Rainbow Guardian which protects the figures on three sides, indicating the sand painting roots of this particular style. The Yei rug portrays ceremonies on a desire for healing, not only physical health, but also mental, spiritual, and even material well-being. The "Holy People...

Stanislav V'Soske Palatial Abstract Wool Area Rug, Yellow, Pink, Green, Red 1970
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Stanislav V'Soske palatial sized abstract area rug, 1970s Wool. Hand-tufted. Manufactured by V'Soske Inc, USA. Underside with V'Soske label. Measures: 191" H x 119" W. Provenance: Private Collection, Los Angeles. Stanislav V'Soske (1899–1983) was an American carpet designer and manufacturer, co-founder of V'Soske Inc. V’Soske Inc., a bespoke carpet company, was established by V'Soske in the mid-1920s. A trained portrait painter, he became interested in rug manufacturing in the early 1920s, and subsequently founded the world-class carpet company. Being constrained by dated manufacturing techniques and materials, Stanislav “Stan” V’Soske, along with his brothers, Bronyck and Aloyzy, invented the modern hand-tufting technique of rug making, methods to vary the surface and heights of carpeting in tufted, incised or modeled patterns, as well as materials used to make their rugs. Successfully creating an alternative to the traditional loop pile method, Mr. V'Soske perfected a way to tuft through a strong cotton base, creating a needle that could provide various pile heights and densities. This innovation made possible versatility in the interpretation of design and a custom capability that has been unchallenged ever since. From its inception in 1924, V’Soske has been committed to the understanding that the rug is a vital component of space and an extension of the architects’ design philosophy. In 1940 the Museum of Modern Art. New York approached Stanislav V'Soske to collaborate with a group of ten artists on eleven designs V'Soske completed the Collection in 1942 and the Museum offered the Collection in a showing at The Museum Of Modern Art. The show was called "New Rugs By American Artists" and aroused much interest especially among artists and designers. It became part of a traveling show, throughout the United States and Canada, conducted by The Museum Of Modern Art. Two of the rugs, Stuart Davis' "Flying Carpet" and Arshile Gorky's "Bull In The Sun" are now a part of the Museum's permanent collection. The Collection is as important today as when it was first presented and adjudged by American critics as "Fifty years ahead of it time." V'Soske was also included in the important 1950 MoMA " " exhibition (see images). V'Soske's carpets are held in collections and exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and formerly the White House. In 1979, Ellen Hertzmark and Roger McDonald were appointed as V'Soske Inc. Directors of Design. Hertzmark and McDonald's long tenure documents a profoundly important "design" rebellion in hand-tufted wool and silk against 1970s minimalism (exemplified by the hegemony of gray industrial wall-to-wall carpeting), and the transition to decidedly more exuberant postmodernism. V'Soske gave architects the opportunity to express their philosophies with color, pattern, and texture. During the mid 1970s, architecture was in a period of transition as the post-war promise of a new utopia...
