Mid Century Hand Hooked Wool Mats And Coasters By Chéticamp Artist

About the Item

What a unique and beautiful Valentine's Day gift for that special someone! These beautifully made vintage Chéticamp hand hooked wool mats and coasters were crafted in the traditional method of rug hooking of the area dating back at least 150 years. Chéticamp is a rural community in Cape Breton Nova Scotia settled by French Acadians in the late 18th century after their expulsion by the British from the traditional land of the Mi'kmaq People. Rug hooking in early colonial times was an industrious and creative use scrap wool and burlap from feed sacks to create much needed rugs for warmth on beds and floors during the northeast coastal winters. In the 1920s, the Washington-born artist Lilian Burke discovered these masterfully crafted rugs from the family of Alexander Graham Bell with whom she was aquainted. Lilian began selling these to Manhattan art lovers and opened the door to a lucrative cottage industry that enabled these minority women to earn money and support their families and community. These hooked wool mats and coasters on burlap are of various sizes. The largest is 12" X 12" and the smaller mat is 7" X 7". The six coasters are 2.5" X 2.5". The two larger mats have cream backgrounds bordered in scalloped lavender. Each has a floral pattern using hand dyed wool unique to the Chéticamp tradition. The muted shades of olive green, blue, yellow, and pink are also distinctive of the older style Chéticamp rugs. These mats are in fine condition and have been well-preserved over the years. Use the mats for hot plates or pots on the table. Tie in the traditional look with the coasters to protect furniture from heat and water from drink glasses. These beautiful hand hooked items would be perfect for adding a touch of history and elegance to any room in your home and they tell a story of the industriousness, talent, tradition, and resilience of the French Acadian settlers of Chéticamp, Nova Scotia.
