18th Century N.E. Persian Khorasan Carpet ( 8' 8" x 18' 8" - 265 x 570 cm )

About the Item

18th Century N.E. Persian Khorasan Carpet ( 8' 8" x 18' 8" - 265 x 570 cm ) Northeast Persian Long Carpet Khorasan Province Probably Qain, Birjand or other towns in the Qainat district. Late 18th century Cotton warp, white, hand-spun Weft: dark brown wool, 2 or 3 shoots Knotting: wool’ Knots: asymmetric, open left The sides have been reworked. The carpet is of original length and width. The navy indigo field shows a pattern of six full and two half rows of ocher yellow symmetrized palmettes. Each row comprises four motives.; In between are columns of red ragged palmette4s, point u7p and down. The available reserves are decorated with up and down small flowers, pointed ovals with four “gooseneck” lilies each, snowflakes and arrays of nine radiating blossoms. The term “harshang” derives from the crab-like appearance of the ragged palmettes. The Harshang can be larger or smaller in the repeat and in the individual elements. This version is right from the period. The red (cochineal or lac) border is unusual in that in displays large, reversing roughly barbed reversing palmettes instead of the usual fractional rosette lattice pattern. The matching yellow minor borders (safflower dye probably) display reversing palmettes. The pile is quite dry and resembles the autumn clip wool generally used on Qinat carpets. The weave is medium, with no areas of jufti (four warp) knotting prevalent on Khorasan antique carpets. The wool weft is unusual, as most antique carpet6s from the area are on an all-cotton foundation. The variances in both design and structure may place it in a village only generally familiar with Khorasan Qainat protocols, but the general design and tonality make a Qainat attribution and late 18th century date totally acceptable. In the 18th century, this part of Khorasan was the most active weaving center in Iran, producing long and narrow carpets in traditional long and narrow Persian formats for the houses of local and provincial magnates. This carpet is one of them.
