Antique Persian Red and Ivory Floral Silk Mohtasham Kashan Rug c. 1850-1880

About the Item

Antique Kashan carpets are among the finest Persian rugs. They are woven in workshops of the city of Kashan, in north central Iran. Kashan was a hub of silk production since the Safavid dynasty, and has created some of the highest quality Persian silk rugs. During the latter part of the 19th century, weavers also began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets, continuing the high standards of technique and design of the Safavid era. Among the best Kashan carpets are Mohtasham rugs. They are commonly referred to Kashan-Mohtasham rugs and they frequently have deep and rich color palette. This is an exquisite example of a Silk Mohtasham Kashan Rug from c. 1850-1880s, measures 4.4 x 6.6 ft.

  • Antique Persian Red Ivory Green Floral Kashan Area Rug
    Located in New York, NY
Situated on the edge of the desert, Kashan experiences seasonally intense heat, winds and bright sunlight. It has served as an important political and artistic center throughout the major periods of Persian history and is regarded as a major weaving center for antique Persian rugs. Kashan is known for not only silk and textiles, but for decorative ceramic tiles. Although Kashan rugs are known to have been woven since at least the Sassanian Empire, 224 to 642 CE, there are two major periods of carpet production. The first was during the Safavid period in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in royal workshops and commercial weaving centers. The second was during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries under Qajar rule, primarily for export but also for use by the Persian upper class. Antique Kashan rugs are a specific antique rug style...

An extraordinary early 20th century Persian Mohtashem Kashan Silk rug. Measures: 3'4'' x 3'8'' The rarest group of Kashan carpets that utilizes non-traditional designs and color palettes is the “Motashem Kashan,” which was woven up to the end of the 19th century. This elite class of Kashan carpets uses a very luminous quality of lamb’s wool, which gives the surface a highly reflective quality. Quite hard-to-find, true Motashem Kashan rugs are extraordinarily finely knotted. They employ either a graceful teardrop medallion or intricately detailed all-over blossom and leaf patterns. Their preferred color palette is subtle pastel and earth tones, contrasted by a penetrating midnight indigo blue.  At the same time, these hues retain a remarkable luster, as the rich lanolin has risen to the surface of each fiber of wool. Also, early Motashem Kashan rugs often demonstrate a very sensitive and emotive use of intentional color shading, a technique known as abrash. In Mohtasham Kashan carpets...
