Antique Tehran Blue and Yellow Wool Rug, Birds All-Over Pattern

About the Item

This antique Tehran wool rug has a surprisingly similar color scheme to neoclassicist Aubusson rugs, though the design is indicatively Persian. As a piece from 1910, the minutia of the border resembles a millefleur style, but the forest imagery, including brown tree branches, doves, hummingbirds, and more, is a clear naturalist homage to spring and the changing seasons. The field has perfect symmetry like many pieces from the great Persian revival in the late 19th century, but because Tehran’s distinct style of rug making is relatively recent in history, this piece draws influence from many different styles more like Tabriz and Yazd rugs. Among the dominant hues of sky blue and golden-yellow are accents of red and pink, as well as black outlines. Hand knotted in the thick wool pile, quick and easy to clean.
