Incredible 19th Century Serapi Rug

About the Item

An incredible mid-19th century Persian Serapi rug woven by a highly skilled master weaver! The central medallion is diamond in form with a deep indigo field. In the centre of the field is a large-scale flower with scrolling vines and leaves radiating out, woven in crimson, salmon, green and natural wool colors. The indigo diamond rests on a large crimson field of trolling vines and flowers in complementary wool to the medallion. Something to note is the use of wide open spaces between the flowers and vines in the crimson field. This lends an air of sophistication and thoughtful design on the part of the weaver, not typically seen in rugs of this period. The border is contrasting, with a wide indigo stripe woven with flowers and vines, surrounded by multiple thinner floral and geometric stripes.

Antique Talish Rug, 19th Century
Located in San Francisco, CA
Antique Caucasian Talish Rug, 19th Century The Talish, or Talysh, are an ethnic Iranian minority traditionally inhabiting the border region of Azerbaijan straddling Northwest Persia and the South Caucasus. While the vast majority of Talish pieces are thought to have been woven in the southeast Caucasus, there seems to be some diversity of weave within the group; a few seemingly early Talish design pieces have even been ascribed to weaving centers in neighboring Anatolia. This Talish rug, while using the eponymous rosette border and long and narrow format, is quite different than most of the type. A madder red main border is flanked by colorful blue and green guards...
