About the Item

This Orley Shabahang Qashqai carpet from the Tribal Collection measures 4’2” x 6’2” and showcases an exquisite Qashqai design in indigo, gold, red, and cream wool. Hand-knotted in pure wool, Orley Shabahang’s signature Shekarloo weave produces a soft, luxurious pile and is incredibly durable. The interior field depicts a flourishing flower garden design inspired by antique Qashqai carpets, with three central medallions representing the garden’s water source, or hoz. Blooming flowers, butterflies, and fish motifs decorate the medallions, contrasting the rich indigo background. Intricate floral motifs surround the hoz, with the artist Bahram Shabahang’s signature also completed in gold-colored wool. A complex crosshair field separates the interior medallions from the exterior border by repeating evenly throughout the interior. The border incorporates a geometric crosshair pattern, detailed with small leaf, flower, and caterpillar cocoon motifs. The extended bottom border is intentional, serving as a reference created by the weaver to compare colors and pile length and adding to the uniqueness of this piece. Orley Shabahang works house to house, village to village, with our weavers, working to preserve the art of weaving as a cottage industry and implementing ancient weaving methods to create the antiques of the future.
