About the Item
Depicting a lively garden theme, this hand-knotted carpet, titled Magnolia, measures 5'11" x 9' and belongs to the Orley Shabahang Arts & Crafts collection. Magnolia's design has its roots in the decorative plasterwork of historical buildings in Isfahan, Iran. Lead designer Bahram Shabahang reimagined the three-dimensional flower bulbs and incorporated their motif into this contemporary two-dimensional pattern. Detailed with light blue, light brown, and soft gold wool, Magnolia illustrates a Persian garden theme, showcasing large magnolia flower bulbs in bloom. The magnolia bulbs, created in soft indigo and cream, assemble a perfect background for the stamen in their light-brown and gold tones. Atop the rich brown stalks, symmetric adolescent flowers seemingly continue to grow within the contemporary design. As seen in the bottom right-hand corner, the signature of Bahram Shabahang, sewn in with gold silk, indicates the creator of Magnolia and that its construction is anything but traditional.
