20th Century White, Red, and Green Cuenca Hand Knotted Rug from Spain, 1920s
About
This large carpet from the beginning of the 20th century comes from the Spanish city of Cuenca, located in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. In addition to the decidedly unusual size, it is characterized by a full-field floral motif with the characteristic pastel colors.
Spain was dominated by the Moors from the 8th-13th century, and they introduced the art of knotting rugs. For this reason, these Spanish rugs revealed strong influences of Islamic motifs and designs, often combined with Christian motifs and symbols (garlands and pomegranates).
The Cuenca is in fact completely original and out of the Classic schemes of both the Islamic and European traditions. Another important feature is the type of knot with which they are made: the Spanish Arabic knot, which is performed on a single warp chain alternately and only every three or four rows of wefts.
