The Château de Monceaux: Vintage Chinese Aubusson Tapestry Masterpiece of Grace

About the Item

79767 Vintage Chinese Aubusson Tapestry, 06'06 x 07'10. The Château de Monceaux: A Vintage Chinese Aubusson Tapestry Masterpiece of Grace. This handwoven wool and silk vintage Chinese tapestry pays homage to one of the most celebrated creations of the Royal Gobelins Manufactory in France. Inspired by the famed Chaste de Monceaux panel from the late seventeenth-century Royal Houses series, this stunning masterwork traces its lineage to the artistic vision of Charles Le Brun, principal painter to Louis XIV. Reserved originally for the palaces of the Sun King, these monumental narratives were conceived as expressions of prestige, transforming woven art into symbols of dynastic magnificence. At the heart of the scene lies the Château de Monceaux, one of Louis XIV's favored hunting residences before its disappearance during the French Revolution. Beyond the winter landscape, the monarch and his mounted entourage pursue wild boar through leafless groves, capturing the aristocratic rituals that defined courtly life. The distant architecture, softened by atmospheric perspective, evokes the romance of vanished estates and the grandeur of France's royal age. The foreground unfolds as an illusionistic terrace framed by stately columns, a hallmark of Baroque trompe-l'œil artistry. Rich textiles cascade over the balustrade beside musical instruments, celebrating refinement, culture, and the pleasures of noble society. Exotic birds from the royal menagerie, including elegant cranes and waterfowl, introduce themes of prosperity, grace, and harmony with nature. Throughout the exceptional composition, verdure elements intertwine with architecture to create an idyllic world where cultivated beauty reigns supreme. Encircling the scene, lavish garlands of flowers and ripened fruit symbolize abundance, fertility, and the rewards of the seasons. At the upper center, the sign of Capricorn announces the month of December and serves as a celestial emblem of perseverance and ambition. The lower cartouche bearing the inscription Chaste de Monceaux preserves the memory of the royal hunt itself. Blending the splendor of Louis XIV and Rococo, Louis XV aesthetics with the decorative romance later embraced during the Belle Époque, this exquisite work of art offers collectors an opportunity to experience the enduring elegance of French court culture through a masterfully woven interpretation.
